Boutique holidays in Parga

Parga is not a destination we arrived at by chance, but one we were asked for.

For years, our guests returning from Kalkan have asked the same question — where offers a similar sense of place, without repeating the same experience? Somewhere with atmosphere, walkability, a strong dining scene and a setting that feels both easy and distinctive.

It is a difficult brief.

Parga is one of the few places that answers it convincingly.

Set on the Ionian coast of mainland Greece, it has the visual character of an island — a harbour edged with Venetian architecture, pastel-coloured houses rising in tiers above the water, and a historic castle anchoring it all in place. Yet despite its beauty, it remains grounded — authentic, intimate and refreshingly free from the over-designed, high-gloss feel found elsewhere.

The harbour is the beating heart of daily life.

The main beach sits just in front, fringed by tavernas, with the island of Panagia directly opposite. Everything is within close proximity, and once you are in the town, there is very little reason to leave. Days move easily between sea, café and table, without structure or effort.

Beyond the harbour, the coastline opens out into wide, swimmable bays and smaller coves, while inland, pine-covered hills and olive groves give the landscape a softer, greener feel than many of the islands.

What defines Parga most, however, is its people.

Much of the town is still family-run and owned, with businesses passed down through generations. Hospitality here is not a concept — it is instinctive. The welcome is genuine, the service consistent, and there is a sense that people are deeply invested in what they do. It creates an ease that is difficult to replicate — somewhere you feel comfortable almost immediately, and return to without hesitation.

That same consistency carries through to the food.

There is a genuinely strong café and restaurant culture here — not just places to eat, but places you return to. Traditional tavernas serving regional Epirus dishes sit alongside more contemporary kitchens, where local ingredients are presented with a lighter, more modern approach. It is somewhere you can eat exceptionally well throughout your stay, without repetition.

Evenings are a defining part of the experience.

Along the harbour, restaurants and bars extend onto the stone sea wall, where cushions are laid out directly above the water. Each venue has its own colours, and guests move between them for drinks before dinner. It is informal, sociable, and completely unique to Parga — one of the details our guests mention most often.

The setting simply reinforces it — the island of Panagia just offshore, fishing boats in the bay, and the steady rhythm of the promenade as the evening unfolds.

Why Parga works

Parga works because it delivers consistently — without needing to try too hard.

  • A harbour-led town where everything is genuinely within walking distance
  • A food scene that supports a full week’s stay — from traditional tavernas to more contemporary kitchens
  • Beaches that range from wide and sociable to smaller, more tucked-away coves
  • A destination shaped by long-standing, family-run businesses rather than large-scale development

It is this combination — atmosphere, setting and ease — that makes Parga somewhere people return to, rather than simply visit.

The experience of staying in Parga

Parga is a destination that adapts to how you like to travel.

Some guests choose to spend most of their time within the rhythm of the town — moving between beach, harbour and hotel without needing to plan beyond the day itself. Others use it as a base to explore further, with boat trips along the Ionian coast, visits to nearby islands such as Paxos and Antipaxos, or time spent discovering the wider Epirus region.

Both approaches work naturally here.

Most days tend to centre around the water — whether that’s Valtos Beach just beyond the headland, a smaller cove, or time spent out at sea. The layout of the town makes it easy to move between each without effort.

By evening, attention shifts back towards the harbour.

Dinner becomes the focus — whether that’s a table by the water or somewhere slightly more tucked away in the old streets. Plans tend to remain flexible, shaped more by mood than structure.

It’s this ease — the ability to do very little or explore more — that defines a stay in Parga.

Beaches and the coastline

The coastline is one of the defining features of Parga, and something our guests comment on time and again.

From the harbour, views stretch out across the Ionian towards Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu, with the small island of Panagia just moments from the shore. Pine-covered hills run down to the water, and the sea shifts through countless shades of blue — often with that distinctive, almost peacock-toned clarity the Ionian is known for.

What makes it particularly appealing, however, is how accessible it all feels.

Krioneri Beach sits at the centre of the town, directly in front of the harbour, with Piso Krioneri just around the bay — a little quieter, but equally easy to reach. From here, it’s a natural flow between swimming, coffee and time in the town itself.

Valtos Beach lies just beyond the headland — a wide, well-connected stretch that works well for longer days. It can be reached on foot, but water taxis run regularly from the harbour, making it just as easy to move between beach and town throughout the day.

Further along the coast, Lichnos offers a more removed setting — greener and more enclosed — though it is less central and typically reached by taxi.

The sea throughout this stretch is consistently clear and gently shelving, making it easy to swim and equally well suited to spending extended time by the water.

Food and atmosphere

Dining is a defining part of staying in Parga.

There is real variety — from traditional, family-run tavernas serving regional dishes such as moussaka, kleftiko and freshly grilled fish, to more contemporary restaurants where local ingredients are presented with a lighter, more modern approach.

Setting plays just as much of a role as the food itself. Some tables sit directly on the harbour, others are tucked into the old streets beneath the castle, while a handful offer more elevated views across the coastline.

Many establishments are independently owned and long-established, and that consistency shows — both in the quality of the food and the way guests are looked after.

It is somewhere you can dine well throughout your stay without repetition.

Who Parga suits

Parga tends to appeal to those who value atmosphere and ease in equal measure.

  • Those drawn to smaller, more characterful destinations over large-scale resorts
  • Guests who place real importance on food, setting and where they spend their evenings
  • Travellers who prefer to move easily between beach, town and hotel without relying on transport
  • Those looking for somewhere that feels established, consistent and quietly assured

For many of our guests, it becomes a natural progression from Kalkan — familiar in its rhythm, but offering a different setting and perspective.

When to visit Parga

The season runs from May through to October, with each part of the year offering a slightly different experience.

May, June and September tend to offer the best balance — warm, settled weather, a more relaxed pace, and greater choice when it comes to hotels and restaurants. These months appeal particularly to couples and those looking for a quieter, more considered stay.

July and August bring a livelier feel. The town is at its most animated, with a stronger atmosphere in the evenings, but also higher demand — especially for the most popular hotels and restaurant tables.

Our accommodation in Parga

We work with a small number of carefully selected properties, each offering a unique way to experience the destination.

Some sit just above the town, within walking distance but slightly removed. Others offer more space and privacy on the hillside, while one positioned on the beach.

Each has been hand picked for its unique sense of place, approach to service and location.

Our approach

We focus on independently owned hotels and suites where the experience is shaped as much by the people running them as the setting itself.

These are properties with a clear sense of ownership — not just in design, but in the consistency of service and the way guests are looked after.

We look for an approach to hospitality that mirrors our own — attentive without being overbearing, personal rather than procedural.

In Parga, that naturally leads us towards smaller, family-run properties, where that level of care is embedded rather than added.

“In Parga especially, it’s about finding places that feel right for our guests — individual, well positioned, and very special.”
— Holly Matthews
