Maldives
Marshmallow skies and honeymoon suites for two

Turquoise lagoons, sugar-white sandbanks and palm-fringed shores — the Maldives needs little introduction. Yet beyond those postcard-perfect images lies a destination of surprising depth – one we explore further in ‘Maldives: Think You Know It, Think Again’ – a place of rhythm and ritual, of astonishing marine life and refined hospitality, where each island reveals its own distinct character.
For romantics, families and true escapists, the Maldives offers a rare kind of stillness. Days unfold to the rhythm of the tides, skies deepen to inky black for stargazing, and the world feels wonderfully far away. It’s a place that rewards both spontaneity and thoughtful planning – and that’s where we come in.
The Maldives is unlike anywhere else on earth. Scattered across 960 km of the Indian Ocean, its 1,192 islands are grouped into 26 natural atolls, each surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and shallow turquoise lagoons. Its unique one-island-one-resort concept means that no two islands feel the same – some offer barefoot authenticity and exceptional snorkelling, others focus on wellness, gastronomy or family adventures.
It’s a destination for all ages. Couples fall for its privacy and romance; families love the generous villas, imaginative kids’ clubs and effortless logistics; divers and marine enthusiasts are drawn to extraordinary reefs alive with manta rays, whale sharks and kaleidoscopic fish.
With warm weather throughout the year and sea temperatures that rarely dip below 28–30°C, the Maldives is wonderfully reliable whenever you choose to visit.
December to April – The most settled months
Typically the driest part of the year
Clear skies and bright sunshine
Low humidity
Smooth seas and excellent underwater visibility — ideal for snorkelling and diving
May to October – Softer weather & superb value
Expect occasional tropical showers, balanced by long spells of sunshine
Brief storms may pass through, though they tend to be infrequent
Plankton can reduce visibility, but it brings its own seasonal opportunities
Hotel rates are often at their most attractive, and islands feel noticeably quieter
Shoulder periods we rate highly
Early May and late October often deliver stable conditions and generous sunshine, together with some of the best prices of the year – a perfect combination for travellers seeking value without compromising the experience.
Different atolls host different species at different times, so wildlife sightings vary across the archipelago.
Whale sharks
Found year-round in South Ari Atoll, one of the few regions in the world with resident populations
The calmest seas and clearest conditions are usually between December and April
Manta rays
Encountered across the Maldives at various times depending on monsoon currents
The renowned feeding events at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll take place from May to November, when plankton blooms draw huge numbers of mantas
In other atolls, especially Ari, mantas can often be seen from October through April
Beyond the lagoon, the Maldives offers endless ways to fill your days:
Snorkelling and diving among thriving reefs
Paddleboarding or kayaking over crystalline shallows
Surfing breaks suited to both beginners and pros
Dolphin cruises, sunset sailing and sandbank picnics
Open-air cinema, art classes, cooking workshops and destination dining
Yoga on a sunrise sandbank, spa rituals over the water, or simply star-gazing into an unpolluted sky
Visiting local islands to glimpse everyday Maldivian life
Whether you’re chasing manta rays or simply a slower pace, every island has its own rhythm.
Reaching the Maldives is easier than many imagine. Direct flights from London to Malé take around 10 hours 25 minutes, with indirect options via the Middle East and Europe typically taking 12-16 hours depending on layovers.
From Malé, transfers are part of the experience:
Speedboat: Quick, easy and ideal for families or late arrivals.
Seaplane: A breathtaking scenic flight over the atolls, operating in daylight hours.
Domestic Flight: Air-conditioned aircraft linking more remote atolls with speedboat onward transfers.
