Follow quiet paths where cypress trees frame the last light over Lake Garda

Lake Garda
Where an afternoon gelato becomes part of the ritual

Italy’s most enchanting lake, where mountains, gardens and grand villas meet
Framed by mountains and threaded with cypress-lined roads, Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake – and one of its most beautiful. Along its shores elegant villas sit beside lemon groves, historic harbours and pastel-coloured towns that tumble gently towards the water.
Life here moves at an easy pace. Ferries glide between lakeside villages, cafés spill into sunny piazzas and the lake itself becomes the centre of everything – for sailing, swimming or simply watching the light shift across the mountains.
Each season reveals a different side of Lake Garda. Spring brings flowering gardens and bright green hillsides. Summer is made for boat trips, long lakeside lunches and evenings that stretch late into the night. Autumn softens the landscape, as vineyards in nearby Lombardy and Veneto begin their harvest.
For travellers from the UK, the lake is wonderfully accessible. Verona airport lies little more than an hour away, making Lake Garda just as appealing for a long weekend as for a relaxed summer holiday. Many guests combine time by the water with visits to Verona, Venice or the Valpolicella wine region.
Lake Garda is also a place of striking contrasts. In the north, near Riva del Garda and Torbole, the lake narrows beneath dramatic Alpine peaks, creating a landscape beloved by sailors and windsurfers. Further south the scenery softens, with vineyards, olive groves and historic towns such as Sirmione and Desenzano. Along the western shore – where Villa Sostaga sits above Gargnano – the atmosphere feels quieter and more romantic, with lemon terraces, historic villas and winding roads revealing some of the lake’s most beautiful views.
For travellers seeking character, scenery and a sense of timeless Italian hospitality, Lake Garda remains one of the most rewarding places to stay in northern Italy.
Why visit Lake Garda
Lake Garda appeals to many different travellers at once. For some it is the scenery – a meeting point of Alpine drama and Mediterranean softness, where mountains fall towards olive groves and lemon terraces. For others it is the rhythm of life beside the water: mornings wandering quiet harbours, afternoons spent swimming or sailing on the lake, and evenings lingering over dinner as the light fades across the mountains.
The lake also lends itself beautifully to exploration. Ferries connect many of the most picturesque towns, while winding lakeside roads reveal historic villages, hidden beaches and extraordinary viewpoints. Limone sul Garda, Gardone Riviera and Salò are all easy to reach, each offering its own blend of gardens, history and lakeside restaurants.
Yet Lake Garda is just as appealing for doing very little at all. Many visitors simply settle into the calm of their surroundings – enjoying the views, the gentle climate and the timeless pleasure of Italian hospitality.
A historic villa above the lake
Villa Sostaga Boutique Hotel is our carefully chosen hotel on Lake Garda. Perched high above the western shore near Gargnano, this elegant nineteenth-century villa enjoys one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the lake, surrounded by wooded parkland and terraces that look out across the water and the mountains beyond.
Originally built as the hunting lodge of Count Giuseppe Feltrinelli, the villa today remains proudly family-run. Owner Francesco Seresina is very much part of the life of the house, welcoming guests with genuine warmth and often sharing his deep knowledge and passion for Italian wines. Antique furnishings, paintings and curios collected over many years give the interiors the atmosphere of a grand private residence, while the restaurant and terraces make the most of the sweeping lake views.
From here it is easy to explore the towns and gardens of Lake Garda – Gargnano, Limone sul Garda and Gardone Riviera all lie within easy reach – before returning in the evening for dinner overlooking the water as the light fades across the lake.
