Probably our favourite region of all, the untouched wilderness of Sri Lanka’s eastern frontier, Gal Oya National Park remains as it always has, offering a rare and truly unique escape for those in search of authentic adventure and close encounters with nature and wildlife. Encircling the serene Senanayake Samudraya reservoir, this extraordinary sanctuary is the only place in the country where you can witness the majestic sight of elephants swimming during an exclusive boat safari—an intimate encounter found nowhere else. For those eager to explore, the park's traditional jeep safaris and extensive walking and mountain biking trails unveil a world of wild beauty, from lush forests and sweeping grasslands to majestic mountain vistas.

Teeming with wildlife, Gal Oya is home to 32 species of mammals, including wild boar, sloth bears, water buffalo, axis deer, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Enjoy fresh seafood at one of the little beach restaurants with the picturesque bay as a backdrop, or pop into the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum for a sample of the local traditions. Fascinating and beautiful Buddhist hermitages, situated on the islets of Koggala Lake, may be visited with prior arrangement,  Alternatively, you can take a catamaran ride or go on a fishing expedition on the lake with one of the villagers, or enjoy a tuk-tuk ride along the dirt tracks to the lake and enjoy the indigenous flora and fauna, including the elusive monitor lizard.
