Negombo, a vibrant fishing town on Sri Lanka’s west coast, sits conveniently close to Bandaranaika International Airport. Once a key hub in the colonial tussles of the Dutch, Portuguese, and British, Negombo’s history is deeply intertwined with the lucrative cinnamon trade. So prized was the wild cinnamon of the region that it was described as ‘the very best in the universe’. Today, you’ll find remnants of its colonial past alongside a strong Catholic influence, evident in its many churches. The town’s peaceful lagoon and network of canals provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching, while its Old Quarter offers a glimpse into its rich heritage. Add to this a warm and welcoming local community, and Negombo becomes a must-visit destination on Sri Lanka’s west coast.

Encircling the serene Senanayake Samudraya reservoir, this extraordinary sanctuary is the only place in the country where you can witness the majestic sight of elephants swimming during an exclusive boat safari—an intimate encounter found nowhere else. For those eager to explore, the park's traditional jeep safaris and extensive walking and mountain biking trails unveil a world of wild beauty, from lush forests and sweeping grasslands to majestic mountain vistas.

Teeming with wildlife, Gal Oya is home to 32 species of mammals, including wild boar, sloth bears, water buffalo, axis deer, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. The thriving port town of Tangalle, in Sri Lanka's southern province, boasts a blend of beachside charm and historical intrigue. Its sweeping sandy shores, dotted with striking rocky promontories—giving rise to the town's name, meaning ‘projected rock’—offer not only scenic beauty but also prime fishing grounds for locals. Tangalle’s colonial past lingers in its architecture, most notably in the old Dutch fort, now repurposed as a functioning prison.

Tangalle also serves as a gateway to the remarkable Mulkirigala Rock Temple, located 16 kilometres north. This ancient temple complex, perched on a dramatic rocky outcrop, comprises seven caves spread across five terraced levels. Within, visitors are greeted by a series of imposing reclining Buddha statues, complemented by smaller seated and standing figures, all set against the backdrop of vibrant and fantastical wall murals. The tiny tranquil town of Ahangama, tucked away in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, lies close to the island’s southernmost tip. Renowned for its captivating coastline and exceptional surfing spots, Ahangama offers more than just waves. Ride the surf at Weligama Bay, hop on a local tuk-tuk, or visit the Turtle Bay Activity Centre to meet the resident turtles. Indulge in local brews, cocktails, and fresh smoothies at the inviting beach bars. Explore the serene Handunugoda Tea Estate, unwind at the unspoiled Midigama Beach, or discover the nearby Koggala Lagoon. The village of Koggala on Sri Lanka’s south coast offers stretches of exquisite beaches and wonderfully good surf - perfect for those seeking a quiet holiday surrounded by nature. Enjoy fresh seafood at one of the little beach restaurants with the picturesque bay as a backdrop, or pop into the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum for a sample of the local traditions. Fascinating and beautiful Buddhist hermitages, situated on the islets of Koggala Lake, may be visited with prior arrangement,  Alternatively, you can take a catamaran ride or go on a fishing expedition on the lake with one of the villagers, or enjoy a tuk-tuk ride along the dirt tracks to the lake and enjoy the indigenous flora and fauna, including the elusive monitor lizard.
