Essaouira is probably our favourite seaside town on Morocco’s windswept Atlantic coast, buildings are impressively white with brilliantly blue shutters, there is a thriving fishing community and a spirited old town, as well as a jumble of picturesque cafes situated on shady plazas. The medina is confined to solid ramparts and sits adjacent to an 18th- century military harbour, beyond is an enormous swathe of sand that runs along the suburb and length of the city. Unusually for Morocco, Essaouira’s vendors in the heart of the Medina are hassle- free and shopping can be enjoyed at your pace. For those looking to do more than shop, there are plenty of superb art galleries nestled in the medina, the perfect place to pause and escape the heat of the day. Foodies will love the traditional fish restaurants where you can sample the catch of the day, just behind the beach. The fierce winds attract kite surfers as well as the surfing fraternity.

Essaouira has it’s very own charm and sense of place– in our opinion it is deeply spirited and just delightful in every way.
