Cayo occupies a spectacular elevated position above Plaka, its distinctive terraced architecture following the contours of the mountainous landscape and looking directly towards Spinalonga Island, a UNESCO World Heritage List nominee. The sparkling waters of Mirabello Bay stretch out below, while Plaka village is just 250 metres away.

Exceptional attention to detail is demonstrated throughout the Cayo concept. The property has been meticulously designed to blend into its surroundings and embrace Cretan architectural traditions. Interiors by Milanese designer Gian Paolo Venier take inspiration from the culture and natural landscape of the island, combining local craftsmanship with contemporary furnishings, cool neutral tones and materials rooted in Greece, including white marble, Volakas marble and terracotta. The result is beautifully considered: sophisticated without feeling overly polished, and luxurious while retaining a genuine connection to Crete.

Accommodation is generous, with 117 rooms, suites and maisonettes, all enjoying sea views and some with their own private swimming pool. There is an excellent choice for couples, families and friends travelling together, including spacious one, two and three-bedroom options.

For 2027, Cayo also introduces a new Three Bedroom Villa with Private Pool and Sea View, set at the highest point of the resort with unobstructed views across Mirabello Bay towards Spinalonga. Arranged over three levels, it offers two master bedrooms with king-size beds and en-suite bathrooms, a lower-level bedroom with a half-double bed and en-suite bathroom, a private internal lift, a 45m² freshwater swimming pool and a 40m² outdoor living area with its own kitchen, lounging and al fresco dining space.

Families have even more reason to consider Cayo for 2027. Children aged 0–11 years stay free on the basic board arrangement, subject to the occupancy rules of the room category booked, while the resort’s family offering includes a children’s playground and Kids, Crèche and Teens Club. Combined with Cayo’s larger family accommodation and multi-bedroom options, it makes the resort particularly appealing for families looking for space, privacy and the facilities of a luxury resort.

For those seeking plenty of rest and relaxation, Cayo has three outdoor swimming pools, while its spot on the pebbly beach at Plaka, just 250 metres away, offers complimentary sunbeds, gazebos and umbrellas. The Armonia Spa has an indoor pool, sauna, hammam, three treatment rooms and a hair salon, while the Fitness Suite and Yoga Studio are there for those who prefer not to let a holiday interfere too much with their workout rituals.

A stay at Cayo allows guests to be as well looked after – or as independent – as they choose. The resort has five restaurants and three bars, giving plenty of scope to stay put when the mood takes you. Dining ranges from buffet breakfast and dinner at Ambrosia and Filema, to contemporary interpretations of Greek cuisine at Kelari and Mediterranean dishes at poolside Sage & Thyme. Down in Plaka, Stone Beach by Cayo serves authentic Cretan meze, snacks and à la carte lunch, with dinner also served during high season.

But one of Cayo’s great strengths is that you do not have to remain within the resort at all. Plaka village is just 250 metres away, with its waterfront tavernas and boats across to Spinalonga; Elounda is approximately 4.5km away and Agios Nikolaos 12km. The wider region opens up opportunities for exploring eastern Crete at your own pace, with Spinalonga itself easily accessible by local boat.

Cayo’s relationship with its surroundings goes further than its architecture. Seasonal produce is sourced from selected local, eco-friendly farms, while the resort’s own organic garden produces seasonal herbs. Solar panels ensure that more than 60% of the accommodation’s water is heated by the sun during summer, while the swimming pools use modern water-recycling technology. Energy saving, recycling, waste management, composting and an electric vehicle charging station form part of the resort’s wider environmental programme.

No matter how you prefer to holiday, Cayo Exclusive Resort & Spa in Crete makes it remarkably easy to slow down without feeling cut off from the island around you. And then there is the team: warm, proud and naturally hospitable, delivering attentive service without formality. It is that combination of design, space, setting and genuine Cretan hospitality that makes Cayo rather difficult to leave.
